The United States spends more per capita on health care than any other nation. Yet Americans have few tools with which to compare the safety, effectiveness and value of technologies, treatments and therapies. Information technology has transformed our economy, achieving savings, efficiencies and productivity gains in virtually every area of life. Yet much of our health care system remains paper-based. The American people deserve high-value health care – a system in which every dollar spent on health by patients, employers and by governments is a dollar well spent. Health plans are implementing a range of strategies to help patients improve their well-being and maximize value in health care. We are deploying a new generation of cost-saving strategies that make routine medical care and prescription drugs more affordable. Those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and asthma are embracing our disease management programs that help them follow their treatments and enhance their quality of life. These programs also reduce the need for costly emergency care and hospital stays. It is time for the nation as a whole to adopt strategies that promote value throughout the health care system.
